Three years ago this month, we were preparing to cut in an access road into our new forest land property we purchased. Something we had no idea how to do but with help we did it. This last weekend we were able to stay in our unfinished home, as we have temporary occupancy. It won’t take us long to complete the few things the county is asking but it will take a while longer to finish the inside.
Still, we were excited to sleep and live in our home for the first time. Our romantic pizza cooked in our new oven. Our first meal by our new wood stove. I finally felt warm after several autumns of feeling cold in multiple layers of clothing.
Stayin in the house was surreal and a little awkward. Jer and I had our trailer hopping system down. Staying in the house felt a little clunky. For instance, I put the few food items we brought in our large frig and realized I forgot things at home. Not to mention, it felt ginormous compared to our trailer frig.
The water pressure was amazing, and our tankless hot water heater ran like a charm. I must admit using a regular toilet felt odd. Every time I used it, I felt the need to look for the foot pedal to flush… the kind that all trailers have.
Oh, but the warmth from the wood stove… I’ve missed that. To feel warm all the way through without the temperature rising and falling like it does in a trailer. Jer and I are still getting the hang using the wood stove again. The first night was great. The second night we overfilled it too soon. By the time we went to bed we had the windows open and neither of us were using covers. A few hours later it was just getting to the right degree when Jer shut the widows and restoked the fire. Then we were back to miserable. Neither of us slept well that night. Plus, our futon is a full-size bed, not a queen. You just need a bigger bed when it’s hot.
Jer and I are thrilled to be at this point even though we wish we had more completed. We can’t wait to give it another try next weekend.
